Paint a Watercolor
Have you created a watercolor painting before?
Goal:
Goal:
- Place a piece of heavyweight watercolor paper in a sink with about 1 inch of water. Immerse completely.
- Place on a large piece of board on top of a table where your child may paint.
- Put red, blue, and yellow watercolors in separate bowls, along with a cup of fresh water next to your paper.
- With a piece of clean, slightly damp sponge, wipe the paper gently, removing any excess water.
- With a paintbrush, begin your painting by forming the “light” by using yellow and creating a circle in the middle of the paper. Because you are painting with the “wet on wet” method, the watercolor will bleed onto the paper.
- Next clean your paintbrush in fresh water. With your fingers, squeeze out the excess water from the brush.
- Now, using blue, paint the “sky” above and the “water” or earth below. Again, clean your brush in fresh water and squeeze out the excess water
- Add red to the top of the paper. The paints will combine, creating a purplish color, much like a sunset.
- Add yellow to the blue below to create the green of the earth.
- Always remember to clean off your paintbrush well and squeeze it dry between color changes. Don't worry, though if you forget! Just keep going and see what happens with the colors! The great joy of the “wet on wet” experience is that they are never the same and the colors take on a life of their own.
