Let's look at the role a state plays in trade and the economy.
Florida is a top travel destination for tourists. In fact, this state relies on tourism for much of its economic growth. Florida's thousands of miles of white, sandy beaches with ocean access on almost every side allows travelers to enjoy many different waterfront activities. Florida is also home to many cruise ports where people can travel to other nearby islands. Another popular tourist destination has a famous mouse that welcomes millions of people to its park each year. Any guesses? If you were thinking Walt Disney World, you're right! With Florida having so much to offer, no wonder its tourism industry is one of the biggest in the country, if not the world. Florida has a warm climate which allows for a longer growing season, too. Because of this, many agricultural products come from Florida. Fruits, vegetables, dairy products, and sugar all come from Florida. If you live in an area that has a cold winter, the fresh vegetables you eat in winter are most likely from Florida. Florida is also one of the largest states in the U.S. involved in international trade. Because of its location, Florida exports many items to Latin America, South America, and the Caribbean. These items include things like cars, engines, airplanes, computers, and phones. Since Florida has some of the largest sea ports, it makes shipping products out of the country easier. |
As you continue to look at U.S. imports and exports, think about how other states in the country participate in international trade. As in Florida's case, it is a crucial part of the nation's economy.
