All of the states but one have a state song. The only state without a state song is New Jersey. Some states even have more than one song. West Virginia has four official state songs. Massachusetts has a state anthem, a state folk song, a state ceremonial march, a state patriotic song, a state glee club song, a state polka, and a state ode. Wow! New Mexico has songs in both English and Spanish. Hawaii's state song has both English and Hawaiian lyrics. While some states kept their original state songs, others have changed their songs or added to them throughout history.
All state songs are meant to embody or celebrate the state. Each state is unique, and state songs reflect the greatness of each state. Do you know your state song? This lesson will provide you with an opportunity to learn your state song and then sing it for your teacher. If your state has more than one state song, just choose one to learn. If you live in New Jersey, you may choose any state's song to learn, or you can learn the national anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner."
There are four state songs featured in this lesson. If you live in a different state, research your state's song and lyrics with the help of an adult.
