Any American who is arrested has the right to counsel. This means you have a right to a lawyer. The right to counsel is granted in the Sixth Amendment. What if you can't afford a lawyer to represent you in court? The U.S. recognizes how important it is to have legal counsel if you are accused of a crime, so a second right is attached to your right to counsel. If you can't afford a lawyer, a lawyer is appointed to you, and he or she is paid by the government. Why is counsel so important? The U.S. legal system is very complicated and difficult to understand if you have not studied law. A lawyer explains and defends your rights and is on your side during the entire process.
