In this lesson you will learn about community activism. A community is a group of people that lives in the same area. An activist is a person who works to solve a problem by raising awareness in others and bringing about change. Community activism, then, provides a way for people to work together to solve a problem in their neighborhood, town, or city.
Things don't always seem fair, do they? It may be difficult, but it is possible to change things that are unfair. You will study the lives and actions of Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr., two very brave people who experienced social injustice and did something about it. Social injustice is being treated unfairly just for being the person you are. The kinds of changes they made were difficult and sometimes dangerous, but they did not give up their fight for justice, or fair treatment. The fearless actions of these two people changed the world for the better.
