Who are some famous political leaders from history?
Mahatma Ghandi was a famous political leader in India. Ghandi lead the Indian people in a nonviolent movement to obtain their independence from Great Britain. Today's citizens of India are grateful to Mahatma Ghandi for their country's independence.
Another famous political leader from history is Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Mandela also believed in nonviolence in working for equality for everyone. He earned the Nobel Peace Prize for global peacemaking.
The United States has had great political leaders, too. This is Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States of America. Lincoln preserved the Union during the Civil War and abolished slavery in America.
This is Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR served as the President of the United States of America during the Great Depression.
While the United States was in great economic hardship, FDR expanded the power of the federal government and created programs to help Americans.
Another type of leader is a military leader. Military leaders lead the country's troops and military efforts. This is Joan of Arc. She was a critical military leader for France during the Hundreds Years' War. Joan of Arc helped lead the French Army to victory over the English.
This is Genghis Khan of Mongolia. He united the nomadic tribes of Mongolia. Then he and his army took over much of central Asia and China.
America's first military leader was also a political leader. Can you guess who fulfills this? Did you say George Washington? Washington led the American Revolution for freedom from England. Then the people elected George Washington as our nation's first president.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was the supreme commander of the Allied Forces in World War II. Eisenhower is also known for obtaining a truce in Korea and working hard in his eight years to help the tensions after the Cold War.
