When you look up in the sky, do the clouds sometimes look different? Are they puffy? Wispy like a feather? High in the sky? Low to the ground? Different types of clouds tell us things about the weather. Click each tab to learn about three kinds of clouds.

cumulus clouds

Fluffy clouds are called cumulus clouds. Their tops might get taller and taller. The bottoms do not change. You can see cumulus clouds in good weather. The weather might be sunny and warm. Sometimes rain falls from these clouds. The rain does not last a long time. It may fall fast and stop quickly. If the clouds are big, thunder and lightning might happen, or hail may fall.

cirrus clouds

Cirrus clouds look like feathers. They are very high in the sky where the air is cold. They are so high that they are made of ice. Rain does not fall from these clouds. You can see them at any time of year. In some places, they come just before and just after the rain. If you see cirrus clouds, rain might come in one or two days. It also might be the end of a rainy period and the start of clear skies.

stratus clouds

Stratus clouds are very wide. They cover the sky like a blanket. When we see them, the weather is not very sunny. Rain or snow may fall for a long time.
