Goal: Understand halves.

How much of the ground is covered in rocks?

Foundation with rocks on one half and dirt on other half.

It looks like the ground is partitioned into two equal parts. To partition means to divide into parts. Equal parts of a whole are the same size and shape.

Square divided into Equal parts and another square divided into unequal parts.

Each part is a half! Halves are two equal parts. We can make halves when we draw a line through the middle of something. You can draw the line from top to bottom or from side to side. Some shapes can make halves with both kinds of lines.

Foundation divided into halves vertically and another square foundation divided in halves horizontally.

\(\mathsf{ \frac{1}{2} }\) means one half. \(\mathsf{ \frac{1}{2} }\) has a 1, a dividing line, and then a 2.

Let’s look at halves!

Triangle divided into halves.

Square divided into halves vertically and another square divided into halves horizontally.

Circle divided into halves vertically and another circle divided into halves horizontally.

Hexagon divided into halves vertically and another hexagon divided into halves horizontally.

We can partition objects and shapes into two equal parts to make halves!
