Logan loves The Dragons of Broomwood Castle! He is pretending that he is in the book. Logan wants to help the dragons by putting them into equal groups. Then they can go on their quests to save Broomwood!

When you put items into equal groups, you are dividing them. You will use repeated subtraction to divide. The dividend becomes the minuend. The divisor becomes the repeated subtrahend. Then you find out how many times to take away the repeated subtrahend to get 0. The number of times you subtract is the quotient! Are you ready to help Logan subtract to divide?

Now Logan sees 24 dragons. They need to be in equal groups to go on 4 quests. That’s 24 divided by 4! You need to make a repeated subtraction sentence. Which number is the minuend?

24! 24 is the minuend. How many dragons do you need to move out of the box at a time to to get to 0?

4! That is because 4 is the repeated subtrahend.

Keep taking out groups of 4 dragons and subtracting 4 until the box is empty.

Great job! The box is empty! That means we have 0 as a difference. How many groups of 4 dragons do you see?

6! 24 minus 4 equals 20. 20 minus 4 equals 16. 16 minus 4 equals 12. 12 minus 4 equals 8. 8 minus 4 equals 4. 4 minus 4 equals 0! That means 6 is the quotient. 24 divided by 4 equals 6. 6 dragons need to go on each quest!

Here come 35 dragons! They need to be in equal groups to go on 5 quests. That’s 35 divided by 5! You need to make a repeated subtraction sentence. Which number is the minuend? Which number is the repeated subtrahend?

Yes! 35 is the minuend. 5 is the repeated subtrahend. Now you need to find out how many times to take away 5 from 35 to get 0. How many dragons do you need to move out of the box at a time to get to 0?

5!

Keep taking out groups of 5 dragons and subtracting 5 until the box is empty.

Great job! The box is empty! How many groups of 5 dragons do you see?

7! 35 minus 5 equals 30. 30 minus 5 equals 25. 25 minus 5 equals 20. 20 minus 5 equals 15. 15 minus 5 equals 10. 10 minus 5 equals 5. 5 minus 5 equals 0! That means 7 is the quotient. 35 divided by 5 equals 7. 7 dragons need to go on each quest!

You did a great job using repeated subtraction to divide! Thank you for helping Logan so that the dragons can go on their quests to save Broomwood!

Question:

How many dragons do you need to move out of the box at a time to get to 0?

32 \({ \div }\) 4 = ___

32 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 = 0

32 dragons

4! 4 is the divisor and repeated subtrahend.
