Let’s Learn!

How can we divide using equal groups?

Goal:

Goal:

Think About It!

Goal: Define division and learn how to create equal groups.

Ava wants to make pictures of the unicorns from Unicorn Magic. She has 12 unicorn stickers. She wants to put the stickers into 4 equal groups.

Equal groups have the same number of items in them. When we put items into equal groups, we are dividing them. We divide by splitting up a big group of items and putting them into smaller equal groups. Click to see these 10 unicorns divided into 5 equal groups of 2!

We use a division sentence when we divide. It is a lot like what we write when we multiply! The division sentence has different parts. The total number is the first number. It is the dividend. There is a division sign after the dividend. The second number is the divisor. It is the number of equal groups. The quotient is the last number. It is the number in each group and the answer when we divide!

total number divided by number of groups equals number in each group. dividened divided by divisor equals quotient.

Look at the division sentence below. Click on the dividend. Remember, the dividend is the total number.

10

😄 Yes! This is the dividend!

\({ \div }\)

5

🤔 No. This is the divisor.

=

2

🤔 No. This is the quotient.
