Bella the Butterfly has fluttered in to help us compare time. She wants you to learn how to tell time earlier and later than the hour so that you can tell time at different parts of the day.
Earlier time is what occurs before the hour. We subtract time to get to an earlier time.
Later time is what occurs after the hour. We add time to get to a later time. Let’s follow Bella to compare time.
Let’s look at the clock on the left. It is 5 o’clock. The arrow tells us we need to find 1 hour later. Do you know what time it would be 1 hour later than 5 o’clock?
Super! It is 6 o’clock. If we want to find what time it would be 1 hour later than 5:00, we add 1 hour to 5:00.
It is important to know what time is later, but it is just as important to know what time is earlier. Let’s practice with Bella. Look at the clock on the right. It is 5 o’clock. The arrow tells us to find the time 1 hour earlier. Do you know what time it would be 1 hour earlier than 5 o’clock?
Super! It is 4 o’clock. If we want to find what time it would be 1 hour earlier than 5:00, we subtract 1 hour from 5:00.
Let’s try another. The time on the clock on the right is 12:00. The arrow tells us to find the time 2 hours earlier. Do you know what time it would be 2 hours earlier than 12 o’clock?
That is fantastic! It is 10 o’clock. If we want to know the time 2 hours earlier than 12:00, we subtract 2 hours from 12:00.
Look at the time on the clock on the right. It is 8:20. The arrow tells us to find the time 2 hours earlier. Do you know what time it would be 2 hours earlier than 8:20?
That is right! It is 6:20. If we want to know the time 2 hours earlier than 8:20, we subtract 2 hours from 8:20.
Wait! Bella the Butterfly has a final challenge for you. Look at the clock in the middle. It is 4:45. Now we need to find the time earlier and later
Do you know what the time would be 15 minutes earlier than 4:45?
Super! It is 4:30, or half past 4 o’clock! If we want to find the time 15 minutes earlier than 4:45, we subtract 15 minutes from 4:45.
Do you know what time it would be 15 minutes later than 4:45?
Excellent! It is 5 o’clock. If we want to find the time 15 minutes later than 4:45, we add 15 minutes to 4:45.
