Damien wants to feed his 4 pet cats some yummy food from his garden. He is learning how to make equal parts. Can you help Damien divide some of his fruits and vegetables into fourths so each of his cats can eat an equal part? Fourths are 4 equal parts of a group or whole object.

One apple is ready to be harvested. Oh, no, there are 4 cats and only 1 apple! Wait, we can cut the apple into fourths so we get 4 equal parts, one for each cat! Let’s cut the apple. 1, 2, 3, 4 equal parts. Good job! The cats are happy!

The cats enjoyed the apple but want something else to eat. Those tomatoes look juicy and delicious! There are 4 tomatoes ready to be harvested! Let’s split the group of 4 tomatoes into fourths.

How can we do this? We have 4 cats and 4 tomatoes. We can divide the tomatoes by giving 1 tomato to each cat. 1, 2, 3, 4. Each cat gets one tomato! Great job! We just divided a group of 4 tomatoes into fourths!

Damien’s cats are almost full. They want one more snack: a delicious carrot. Only one is ready to be picked. It looks like we need to divide this carrot into fourths as wellso each cat can get an equal part. Here is one way we can divide the carrot. Oh, but the pieces would not be equal parts. Let’s try another way. 1, 2, 3, 4 equal parts. Good job! We cut the carrot into fourths! Now the cats can eat them and be happy!

Thank you for helping Damien make fourths and feed his cats! Goodbye!
