Tally Mark Counting

Sophia is learning how to count with tally marks. Can you help her use tally marks to count the toys in the classroom?
Tally marks help us keep track of the items we count. One tally mark means we counted 1 item. When we count up to 5, the 5th tally mark looks like this!
Then we can use one tally for each thing we count up until we get to the next group of 5. Let’s try it out!
Sophia found these blocks. Can you help her count? She will draw a tally mark on the chalkboard for each block.
1, 2, 3. Sophia found 3 blocks. Here are the tally marks she drew. 1, 2, 3. These tally marks show the number 3.
Now Sophia found playing cards. Let’s help her count them! Sophia will write the tally marks. Ready? How many playing cards do you see?

Let’s count one more time. Sophia found a lot of toy cars! How many toy cars do you see?

These tally marks show the number 20. There are 4 groups of 5: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5; 6, 7, 8, 9, 10; 11, 12, 13, 14, 15; and 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Wow!
