Finding the Bigger Set

Goal:

Goal:

The second box has more crayons! These crayons are the bigger set. This means it is the group that has more. The other set has less.

two sets of crayons of different amounts

How do we know which set is bigger? We need to compare them. We have two strategies to help us compare. A strategy is a tool we use to help us find the answer.

The matching strategy is one tool we can use. We will match each item by crossing them out. Then we can see the set that has more!

Cross out one item at a time in each set.

two sets of crayons each with one X on them
two sets of crayons each with two X's on them
two sets of crayons each with three X's on them
two sets of crayons each with four X's on them and a circle around the fifth one in the second set.

The second box has one more crayon! The second box has the bigger set.

The counting strategy is the other tool. We will count the crayons in each set. The set with the larger number is bigger.

two sets of crayons and each are numbered 1 through 4 and 1 through 5

The first box has 4 crayons. The second box has 5 crayons. The second box has the bigger set.

We can match or count to find the bigger set!
