What is symmetry?
Symmetry (SIM eh tree) means that something has similar parts facing each other. Mirror symmetry is when an object is the same on either side of a dividing line. Each side is a mirror image of the other. This type of symmetry is seen a lot in nature! The faces of animals, the wings of butterflies, and many plants show bilateral symmetry. Look at this picture of a butterfly. Notice how the shapes of the wings, and the patterns within them, are the same on either side of its body. They are mirror images of each other!
In this lesson, you will be squishing paint with folded paper to create a monster with mirror symmetry.
