Like many animals, butterflies begin their lives as eggs. When the eggs hatch, out come larvae or caterpillars. Then, comes the pupa stage where a caterpillar makes a hard shell called a chrysalis. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. When it is done, the adult butterfly breaks free and can fly.
