Leaves and Photosynthesis
What role do leaves play in photosynthesis?
Goal:
Goal:
The main function of a leaf is to produce food for the plant which means photosynthesis needs to take place. For photosynthesis to take place, inputs and outputs must occur. Take a look at the chemical equation for photosynthesis:
Carbon Dioxide + Water + Sunlight → Glucose (Sugar) + Oxygen
Sunlight is needed for photosynthesis to take place. Leaves are usually flat and thin, which maximizes the amount of area they expose to the sunlight. Additionally, carbon dioxide is necessary for photosynthesis to take place. To make sure plants receive carbon dioxide, plants have stomata which are tiny holes that allow for carbon dioxide to be absorbed into the leaf and for oxygen to be released.
