Have you ever thought about the difference between cartoon images and real pictures? Look at the two oranges below. One looks flat like a cartoon, and the other looks more like an actual, round orange that you can pick up!
The flat one is a circle, a two-dimensional (or 2-D) shape that has no width or thickness to it. The other one is a sphere. It looks like you can pick it up and hold it. It is a three-dimensional shape, which can also be called a 3-D shape.
