Alrighty, folks, welcome to the biggest race of the year! Here come the red and blue cars. Look at them go!

The red car finished its first lap at 400 seconds, and the blue car finished at 300 seconds. Let’s compare these times.

How much faster was the blue car than the red car? Let’s try subtracting these numbers. Ignore the zeros and subtract the digits in the hundreds place. 4 - 3 = 1. Nice! The blue car was 100 seconds faster than the red car.

Let’s check that answer on this thousand chart. There’s 400. Now let’s jump back 3 rows to subtract 300. There we have it, 100 is correct!

And we’re back to the second lap. There they go, folks! Look, the red car is gaining speed! Who saw that coming? Let’s look at those times!

It looks like the second lap took a bit longer. The red car finished at 600 seconds, and the blue car finished at 300. My, oh my! Let’s compare those scores.

What is 600 - 300? Remember to ignore those zeros and subtract the digits in the hundreds place. That’s right! 6 - 3 = 3. Put those zeros back in, and now we know that the blue car was 300 seconds faster than the red car.

Let’s check that answer on the thousand chart. 600 is right here, and we’re jumping 3 rows back to 300. Our answer is correct, folks!

We’ve got one more lap to go! I’m on the edge of my seat!

The red car comes in first at 400 seconds. That leaves the blue car in second at 700 seconds. How much faster was the red car than the blue car?

We need to subtract 700 - 400. Do you remember what to do? You got it! Ignore those zeros and subtract the digits in the hundreds place. 7 - 4 = 3, so the red car was 300 seconds faster than the blue car.

And here’s that thousand chart again, folks. We’ve got 700 here and 4 jumps back to 300. Would you believe it? Our answer is right again!

You heard it here first, folks! The red car takes the victory today!
