Let’s follow Pepper’s magical wand to learn how to tell time in 5-minute intervals!
First, let’s review what we have already learned about telling time. We have learned a quarter past the hour and half past the hour. Remember, the minute hand tells how many minutes have passed the hour.
Pepper is showing you that the minute hand is on the 3. When the minute hand is on the 3, it is a quarter, or 15 minutes, past the hour.
If Pepper follows the minute hand another 15 minutes, the minute hand is on the 6, which is 30 minutes past, or half past, the hour!
If the minute hand is pointing to the 9, it is 45 minutes past the hour or a quarter to the next hour!
When the minute hand goes all the way around the clock back to the 12, 60 minutes, or a full hour, has passed.
You have learned so much about telling time! Now let’s look at counting 5 minutes at a time. When the minute hand moves from one number on the clock to the next, it moves 5 marks, or 5 minutes.
Let’s have Pepper help us count by 5s around the clock. These clocks will help us skip count by 5 minutes. Look at how the minute hand moves around the clocks.
