Goal: Learn the rule of multiplying by one.

The "x" symbol means multiplication. When you multiply, you add equal groups of things together. This is called repeated addition.

There is a simple way to solve multiplication sentences when you multiply by 1. When you multiply by 1, the answer is always the same as the number being multiplied by 1.

Let’s look at a couple examples.

$2 goats$

Here is 1 group of 2 goats, or 1 x 2 = 2 goats.

Notice that 2 multiplied by 1 is still 2!

When you multiply by 1, it does not matter if the 1 comes first. You can also think of this picture as 2 groups of 1, or 2 x 1 = 2. The answer is the same!

Take a look at the next example.

$3 kittens$

This is 1 group of 3 kittens, or 1 x 3 = 3 kittens. You can also use repeated addition to solve 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.
