Do you remember Abraham Lincoln? He was our 16th President. You probably remember that he was our President during the Civil War, and he fought to end slavery in our country.
Did you also know that he has the nickname "Honest Abe"? There are many stories of Abraham Lincoln's honesty, from the time he was young to when he served as president. Let's talk about how he became known for being honest and trustworthy.
When Abraham was young, he worked in a store as a clerk. He was always honest with money. Even if someone paid just one penny too much, Abraham wanted to make it right. He would close the shop and walk long distances to find the person and return the penny. That is honest! This is why people could trust him. Today, Abraham Lincoln is on the front of the penny. Whenever you see a penny, remember his honesty. It is important to be honest in every situation--even a small one, such as when Honest Abe returned a penny. Others will trust you and know you are an honest person. |
