Can you help Jenny, Omar, Lilly, and George wash windows and divide the work into fourths?
Mrs. Kelly wants her 4 kids to help her with some spring cleaning. They are going to help their mom wash some windows. Can you help them divide the work into fourths, or 4 equal parts, so each kid gets an equal share of work? Great!
First, the kids—Jenny, Omar, Lilly, and George—are going to work together to clean the attic window! It is in the shape of a rectangle. Each kid will take one equal part, or one fourth, to clean. Jenny will take the first fourth, Omar will wash the second fourth, Lilly will wash the third fourth, and George will wash the final fourth. Let’s count each fourth they clean: 1 fourth, 2 fourths, 3 fourths, and 4 fourths! Nice! They did a great job!
Alright, now it is time to wash the living room windows! There are 2 windows in the living room, and both are in the shape of squares! Let’s divide the first square into fourths. Great! Now each kid has an equal part to clean! Let’s count each equal part that gets washed: 1 fourth, 2 fourths, 3 fourths, and 4 fourths! Wonderful!
One more time for the second living room window! 1 fourth, 2 fourths, 3 fourths, and 4 fourths! Hooray! The windows look so shiny.
There is one last window to wash. What shape is it? That is right! It is a circle! Let’s divide the circle into fourths! Great! Jenny, Omar, Lilly, and George can now clean equal parts of the circle window! Let’s count! 1 fourth, 2 fourths, 3 fourths, and 4 fourths! What a shiny and clean window. Way to go!
Jenny, Omar, Lilly, and George are done washing all of the windows. Mrs. Kelly is so happy and proud of her kids. She baked them some cookies to enjoy as a reward. Yummy!
Thank you for helping the kids divide the work into fourths so each of them could do an equal share of the chores. The kids can now relax and play outside at the park. See you next time! Bye!
If Jenny, Omar, Lilly, and George want to share an orange, how many equal parts do they need to make?
