Goal: Can you identify patterns of time?
Finn the Firefly shines brightly at night when the stars come out. Finn’s camping friends are getting ready for bed at 9 o’clock. Do you remember the time of day for bedtime?
Excellent! Bedtime for Finn and her friends is 9:00 P.M.! Bedtime occurs during the P.M. part of the day.
Finn has a special star clock to show us how to describe patterns of time. A pattern is a way objects are arranged. A time pattern is a list of two or more times in different intervals. Time patterns happen when time is added or subtracted. Let’s look at the time showing on the clock.
Way to go! It is 1 o’clock. Finn the Firefly is buzzing around the clock below to show us a pattern of hours. If we start at 2:00 and then move to 3:00, it is one hour later. This pattern shows an hour after each time on the clock. If Finn moves from 2:00 to 3:00 to 4:00, can you find what time the next hour will be? Look closely at the hour and minute hands.
You got it! It is 5 o’clock. The time pattern is adding one hour. The same amount of time passes between each time. Keep adding the same amount of time to continue the pattern!
You are seeing the light! Great job finding the time pattern. Let’s try another problem with Finn the Firefly. What time is it?
Way to shine! It is half past 1 o’clock, or 1:30! Remember, when the minute hand is on the 6, it is 30 minutes past the hour. Finn wants you to try a different pattern. Can you find out what it is?
You found the time pattern! It is 3:30, and the pattern of time is adding 30 minutes each time.
You have learned the hour and half hour patterns of time on the clock. Let’s explore some other examples with Finn the Firefly!
Look at each card and think about how much time is being added from one clock to the next. Find the time pattern.
It is 7:00. The pattern of time is adding 15 minutes.
It is 2:30, or half past 2. The time pattern is adding 15 minutes.
It is 8 o’clock. The time pattern is adding 30 minutes.
It is 5:45. The time pattern is adding 15 minutes.
It is 10 o’clock! The time pattern is adding 1 hour.

Can you correctly order the pattern of time to 5 minutes? Drag each time from the earliest time to the latest.
