North American grasslands are also called prairies. They cover about 1.4 million square miles. These grasslands run vertically through the middle of the continent. Beginning in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, these prairies stretch southward through the Great Plains to southern Texas and into northern Mexico. The map below should look familiar – it shows the stretch of prairies in the United States.

The prairies are a type of grassland dominated by herbaceous, or "non-woody," plants and grasses. Very few trees grow on the prairies due to the minimal rainfall. Those that do are usually widely scattered. Both plants and animals have adapted to the prairie ecosystem.
