Bonjour! Thanks for visiting my art studio today! You will learn how to draw 2D shapes. Did you bring a blank piece of paper and a pencil? You will want both for our lesson today.

We will start with a 3-sided shape. Can you think of which shape has 3 sides? Let’s see if you’re right.

Start by making 3 dots on your paper like this.

These are the 3 corners. A corner is called a vertex.

Now, connect the dots with 3 lines. These lines are called edges.

Which shape has 3 vertices and 3 edges? Yes, it is a triangle. Here comes the next 2D shape in your art lesson. It has 4 sides. Do you have any ideas?

Start by drawing 4 dots on your paper like this.

This shape has 4 vertices.

Now, connect the dots by drawing 4 lines of equal length.

Which shape did you draw that has 4 vertices and 4 equal length edges? Yes, you drew a square.

The next 2D shape also has 4 vertices and 4 edges but the edges are not equal in length.

Start by drawing 4 dots for the corners like this. There is more space between the dots horizontally than there is vertically.

Now, draw the four edges to connect the dots. As you can see, two edges are short and two edges are long. Which shape did you draw?

Yes, this is a rectangle!

I would like you to draw a different type of shape before we draw our last one. What shape has no vertices and no edges? It is completely round. Draw that shape for me and then we will see if it looks like mine.

Did you draw a circle? Great job! A circle has no vertices and no edges. It is completely round.

You have one more shape in your Art lesson. This shape has 6 equal sides. Can you think of a shape with 6 edges and 6 corners?

To draw this shape, start by making 4 dots like you would for a square.

Now, draw two dots, one on each side like this. This shape has 6 vertices or corners.

Now it’s time to draw the sides or edges by connecting the dots like this. Voila! What shape did you draw? Excellent, you drew a hexagon.

You did very well in art Class today. Remember this lesson as you continue to draw more 2D shapes.

Au revoir!

What shape can you make when you start with 3 dots?

  1. rectangle
  2. hexagon
  3. triangle
