Goal: Understand division and fact families.
We need to multiply to find how many party bags there are. A multiplication sentence multiplies the number of groups by the number in each group. This gives us the total number!
How many bags does each student get? We will use division to find that out! Division is breaking a number up into equal groups. It is the opposite of multiplication! The symbols / and ÷ show we are dividing.
Multiplication and division sentences with the same three numbers make a fact family. Addition and subtraction sentences make fact families too! Fact-family triangles show the three numbers we need to write the sentences in a family. Let’s try it out!
How many party bags are there? We need to write a multiplication sentence!
There are 2 rows of 6 bags.
Question:
What multiplication sentence can we use?
We can use
2 x 6 = ?
Question:
What is the total number of bags?
2 x 6 = 12
There are 2 rows of 6 bags. That means there are 12 bags in all!
We need to fill out the triangle to help us find the rest of the fact family.
Question:
What is the number of groups?
2 is the number of groups.
Question:
What is the number in each group?
6 is the number in each group.
Question:
What is the total number?
12 is the total number.
Here is the fact-family triangle. We will put the sentences under it to make a fact-family “house.”
We already have 2 x 6 = 12 as a fact in the family. We need another multiplication sentence. We will switch the places of the number of groups and the number in each group! The total number will be the same.

6 x 2 = 12
What if we want to give the 12 bags to 6 students? How many bags would each student get? We need to divide to find this answer!
12 is the total number of bags. 6 is how many groups we want to divide by.
Question:
What number goes on the first line?
12 goes on the first line. It is the total number of bags.
Question:
What number goes on the second line?
6 goes on the second line. It is the number of groups we are dividing by.
Question:
What is 12 / 6?
12 / 6 = 2! Each student gets 2 bags.
We need one more division sentence to have a full fact family!
We already have 12 / 6 = 2 as a fact in the family. We will switch the places of the number of groups and the number in each group! The total number will be the same.
12 / 2 = 6
Fact families can help us find multiplication and division sentences with the same numbers!
