Let’s Learn!

Learn about multiplication and division fact families.

Goal:

Goal:

Think About It!

Goal: Understand division and fact families.

We need to multiply to find how many party bags there are. A multiplication sentence multiplies the number of groups by the number in each group. This gives us the total number!

number of groups x number in each group = total number

How many bags does each student get? We will use division to find that out! Division is breaking a number up into equal groups. It is the opposite of multiplication! The symbols / and ÷ show we are dividing.

number of groups x number in each group = total number. total number / number of groups = number in each group. triangle - top: total number, bottom left: number of groups, bottom right: number in each group

Multiplication and division sentences with the same three numbers make a fact family. Addition and subtraction sentences make fact families too! Fact-family triangles show the three numbers we need to write the sentences in a family. Let’s try it out!

How many party bags are there? We need to write a multiplication sentence!

There are 2 rows of 6 bags.

Question:

What multiplication sentence can we use?

Question:

What is the total number of bags?

There are 2 rows of 6 bags. That means there are 12 bags in all!

fact family triangle - 2 x 6 = 12

We need to fill out the triangle to help us find the rest of the fact family.

Question:

What is the number of groups?

Question:

What is the number in each group?

Question:

What is the total number?

Here is the fact-family triangle. We will put the sentences under it to make a fact-family “house.”

fact family triangle - top: 12, bottom left: 2, bottom right: 6. 2 x 6 = 12. ___ x ___ = ___. ___ / ___ = ___. ___ / ___ = ___

We already have 2 x 6 = 12 as a fact in the family. We need another multiplication sentence. We will switch the places of the number of groups and the number in each group! The total number will be the same.

2 x 6 = 12

What if we want to give the 12 bags to 6 students? How many bags would each student get? We need to divide to find this answer!

fact family triangle - top: 12, bottom left: 2, bottom right: 6. ___ / ___ = ___

12 is the total number of bags. 6 is how many groups we want to divide by.

Question:

What number goes on the first line?

Question:

What number goes on the second line?

Question:

What is 12 / 6?

We need one more division sentence to have a full fact family!

fact family triangle - top: 12, bottom left: 2, bottom right: 6. 2 x 6 = 12. 6 x 2 = 12. 12 / 6 = 2. ___ / ___ = ___

We already have 12 / 6 = 2 as a fact in the family. We will switch the places of the number of groups and the number in each group! The total number will be the same.

12 / 6 = 2
