Now it’s your turn! Let's review steps given in the slideshow to complete your first portrait!

  1. Create the face shape and add main guidelines.
  2. Lightly draw the eyes.
  3. Draw the nose and mouth.
  4. Add the ears, neck, and hairline.
  5. Erase your guidelines and add in details to finish your portrait.

Choose one of the images below or use a live model. If you use a live model, make sure your subject is ready to sit for a while so that you have the proper time to complete the study. (It is easier to work from a flattened image (picture) than it is to work from a live model. Keep this in mind when you are deciding what to draw.) Use your graphite pencils for this project, and then post your portrait study to the Art Discussion Board.

Pay attention to the way this model is turned, as this will impact the face shape and the median line.

Do not get caught up in the pattern in the modle's shirt. It is not important. Just imply the pattern and use a variety of values to indicate the different colors.

This modle's face is very expressive, so it is important to make sure his eyes are done right. Really zoom in if you need to! Also, freckles are another feature that can be implied; instead of putting in every freckle, just add enough to show that the subject has freckles.
