What can we do now to help people in communities that were affected by imperialism and colonization?

How far did imperialism reach? Are its effects still visible today? Aid to Former Colonies (AFC), a diverse group of philanthropists--people who donate money for the benefit of others--needs to know. They hope to fund improvements to infrastructure (roads, bridges, electricity, etc.) in several countries or communities each year for the next ten years. AFC has plenty of money to share. They just need to know where to send the funds and how they should be used.

That's where you come in. You've learned a great deal this year about imperialism and its effects around the globe. You've seen the impact that colonization had on South America, India, and Africa. Your knowledge of colonization in these areas--and its lingering effects--means you're likely to recognize more specific examples of the impact of past colonization.

To help AFC decide where their money should go this year and next, choose a country or region that has been affected by imperialism at some point in its history. (The effects can be negative or positive or a mixture of both.) Do some research online and/or using print reference materials to learn the area's history as the colony of an imperialist nation or empire. Also find out how the region is doing today. Identify any remaining effects of colonization on the area. Then create a presentation that explains to AFC why they should send their money and resources to the former colony you chose.

Your presentation should take the form of a slideshow (using software like PowerPoint or ViewNote) or a short video (using a program like iMovie, MovieMaker, or Captivate). Whatever format you choose, be sure to include images or graphics to help the philanthropists at AFC get to know the country or community that you selected and to make the story more compelling. Your slideshow or video should describe the former colony, identify the immediate and long-term effects of colonization, and suggest some strategies for improving life in that area.

The Activity sheet below should help you get your project started. It suggests some steps to use in creating your presentation. This project should take you a couple of hours to complete, so don't expect to finish it today. In fact, if you are near the end of the time period you have set aside for World History, you may need to wait until tomorrow to start the project.
