When the U.S. entered World War II on December 8, 1941, it declared war on Japan. On December 11, the U.S. responded to Germany's declaration of war by declaring war on Germany. The U.S. had to fight on two fronts, in Europe and in the Pacific, and it had to coordinate the many Allied nations fighting the Axis who looked to the U.S. to lead the Allied war effort.
