How do contemporary Americans interpret the Constitution? What happened to the debates that accompanied the creation of that document? Have they been settled?

Objectives

Students will:

  1. Analyze how the American beliefs and principles reflected in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution contribute to national identity and are embodied in the United States today.
  2. Identify and describe tensions within the U.S. constitutional democracy.
  3. Describe and defend (build an argument for) the appropriate balance between two competing forces in American politics (such as majority rule vs. individual rights, liberty and equality, state vs. national authority, civil disobedience and the rule of law, etc.).
