Where are rotifers found?

You might find a lot of penguins at the South Pole, but you won't find many rotifers.

Rotifers have organ systems that they use to digest their food and to interpret their surroundings. Their surroundings can be on any continent except Antarctica--the South Pole.

In this video you'll see some of the many environments rotifers can be found in.

PDF Download Rotifers have adapted to almost every environment. In fact, they are found on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. The majority of rotifers are planktonic meaning they are found together in great numbers and they tend to float in water environments. Most species are found in freshwater environments; however, a few species are found in droplets within soil, mosses and saltwater. Even in Fido's water bowl. Most rotifers prefer still water environments, such as lake bottoms and stagnant ponds. Rotifers are also commonly found rain puddles, yet some are comfortable in flowing water such as streams. A few species of rotifer have even adapted to being parasites, living on and in crustaceans and certain aquatic larvae. So next time you see water any place, any time, you probably could find rotifers if you examined that water under a microscope.
