Let's Watch

PDF DownloadToday we’re going to be looking at how to exchange telephone numbers in español. This is one of the most useful skills you can learn in another language. If you find yourself in a Spanish-speaking country and are trying to gain contacts or make friends, these are just the phrases you’ll want to know.

In order to ask for someone’s phone number, we ask “¿Cuál es tu teléfono?” There are a couple things of note here. Cuál translates to “which.” so it may seem a bit strange to be asking someone which phone number is theirs, but that is how it is done in Spanish. Notice that the tu has no accent, so it means “your.” If the tu had an accent (), it would mean “you.” ¿Cuál es tu teléfono? literally translates to “Which number is yours?” If you are addressing someone you respect, you substitute su for tu.

So how do we respond to this question? We would reply, “Mi teléfono es . . .” followed by the digits in our number listed one after the other. So if my number was 353-017-96, I would say, “Mi teléfono es tres-cinco-tres, cero-uno-siete, nueve-seis-dos-cuatro.” We simply list off the digits. Now you can go ask for your Spanish crush’s number.  If you want them to call you soon, you could easily say Llámame.” which means “Call me.” in Spanish.

So for "práctica," I want you to answer the question “¿Cuál es tu teléfono?” and reply with your phone number with the digits written out as words in español. Got it? Great!
