In a novel, symbols tend to gather meaning as they appear and reappear throughout the story. For instance, at the beginning of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, the nightmen seem mysterious and slightly threatening. However, after Mr. Morrison shares a story about his childhood, the nightmen create much stronger feelings in the novel’s narrator; just thinking about them evokes terror and anxiety in Cassie and in many readers as well.
