Up to this point you have been looking at each object you’ve drawn as a flat silhouette shape, either filled in with one flat value or cut out of one, even, light or dark color.

The three objects shown here are flat surfaces all on the same level and on the the same plane as the surface of the paper.

They are 2-dimensional, having width and height but no depth.
