Review the differences between the types of storms.

Tornadoes and Hurricanes

Tornadoes and hurricanes are both characterized by high winds. What is the difference between these two types of storms?

Tornadoes form over land, while hurricanes begin over the sea and then may appraoch land.

Hurricane Formation

How can winds at sea help prevent a hurricane?

Hurricanes form when latent heat of condensation accumulates over the ocean. If the winds can dissipate (weaken) this energy, then a hurricane might not develop. But if the winds don't dissipate this energy, it may build up until a hurricane forms.

Thunderstorm Formation

Describe how a thunderstorm forms.

In the first stage, warm air rises rapidly and then cools, creating a strong updraft of air. This air rises until it can go no further, and then the clouds release all of their moisture in a heavy downpour of rain. Thunder and lightning often accompany the rain.
