Read through the slide-show below, and then complete the interative that follows.

Cliff Divers in Acapulco

The Quebrada cliff divers are a group of professional high divers. Based in Acapulco, Mexico, they put on diving shows every day for an enthusiastic audience. The divers plunge 30–41 meters (100–135 ft) from the cliffs of La Quebrada into the sea.

Depending on the waves, the water can vary in depth from 4.8–5.8 meters (16 ft–19 ft). The width of the channel also varies from 12.8–14.6 meters (42–38 ft). Because of these variances, the divers have to time their dives very carefully. At night, they often hold torches, lighting up the sky ask they dive into the water.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Acapulco cliff diving was a regular feature on American television. The Quebrada Cliff Divers competed against the U.S. High Diving Team every year during the Acapulco Christmas Festival. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, this festival showcased "the highest regularly performed headfirst dives" in the world. In 1963, the movie Fun in Acapulco, starring Elvis Presley, brought the cliffs to worldwide attention.
