The umpires are in charge of beginning and ending the game, enforcing the rules of the game and the grounds, making judgment calls on plays, and handling the disciplinary actions.
The umpires are on the field to call plays. Most major league games have four umpires. The chief umpire is positioned behind the home plate, while the other umpires are positioned at first base, second base, and third base. High school and college games have from one to four umpires.
Here are explanations of the umpire’s signals.
"OUT!" | Right fist is clenched, arm is raised. This signal should be made without hesitation. |
"SAFE!" | Both arms are extended in front of the body, palms down. The position should be held long enough to be seen by players, managers, and other umpires. |
"TIME!" | Arms are extended above the head, palms out. This position is held until the ump is satisfied that the signal has been seen and observed. |
"STRIKE!" | The right arm and hand are moved outward from the body and at least waist high. |
"BALLS!" | This is not signaled, just called vocally. |
