Sophia is following a recipe to make some fruit smoothies. The recipe calls for about 640 grams of strawberries, 520 grams of spinach, 480 grams of yogurt, and 710 grams of bananas.

Did you notice that Sophia’s recipe used the word about? That’s because the measurements don’t have to be perfect! Sophia needs help rounding the ingredients to the nearest ten. Ready? Let’s go!

First, Sophia will measure out the strawberries. These strawberries weigh 643 grams. Let’s round 643 to the nearest ten using our benchmark numbers.

Even though 643 is a very large number, our benchmark numbers will be multiples of 10, because we are rounding to the nearest ten. Look! Do you see the multiples of ten?

Here is 643 on the number line. What benchmark number is closest to 643?

That’s right, 640! That means 643 rounded to the nearest ten is 640. This is the perfect amount of strawberries for Sophia’s smoothies.

Now Sophia will measure out the spinach. It weighs 517 grams. The recipe says that the smoothies need about 520 grams of spinach. Let’s round 517 to the nearest ten using our benchmark numbers to see if Sophia has enough spinach for the recipe.

Here is 517 on the number line. Do you see a benchmark number close to 517?

Very good! 520 is the closest benchmark number to 517. That means 517 rounded to the nearest ten is 520. Sophia has enough spinach and can put it in the blender now!

Sophia’s smoothies need about 480 grams of yogurt. She’s measured out 485 grams. Let’s round 485 to the nearest ten using our benchmark numbers.

Here is 485 on the number line. Oh no! Do you remember what to do when a number ends in a 5?

That’s right! If a number ends in 5, we always round up to the larger benchmark number. 485 rounded to the nearest ten is 490.

Hmmm, Sophia’s recipe says the smoothies need about 480 grams of yogurt. Sophia will take out a few scoops of yogurt so that the amount is closer to 480. Great problem solving!

The last ingredient in Sophia’s smoothie recipe is about 710 grams of bananas. She’s measured out 714 grams. Let’s round 714 to the nearest ten using our benchmark numbers.

Here is 714 on the number line. Which benchmark number is closest to 714?

Very good! 710 is the closest benchmark number to 714. She has enough bananas for the recipe. Now Sophia is ready to blend her smoothies!

Those smoothies look delicious! Thank you for helping Sophia round her smoothie ingredients to the nearest ten.
