You know that an opinion is how you feel or think about something. You will be working on writing a paragraph about something you have an opinion about. To help you with this, let’s practice writing together today. We will be working on a topic sentence for an opinion paragraph in this slideshow.

You know that it is important to have a plan for your writing. Take a look at the plan for the opinion topic we will be working on together today. The topic is “Dogs make the best pets.”

You also know that a topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph and it tells what the paragraph will be about. It is the “green light” sentence. So, let’s turn the topic we are writing about today, dogs make the best pets, into a nice sentence.

What will our opinion paragraph be about? It is about dogs making the best pets. Let’s turn that into a topic sentence:

I believe that dogs make the best pets.

It is the “green” light sentence in the paragraph.

Later on this week, you will take an opinion topic you have chosen, and turn that idea into a topic “green” light sentence for your paragraph. So start thinking about how to turn that idea into a sentence.

audio buttonNow, it is time to write! You will write a topic sentence for your opinion paragraph now. This will be the beginning of a “sloppy copy,” or rough draft, of your paragraph. Just write! Do not worry so much about spelling everything perfect. Sound out the words the best you can, and just get your idea turned into a sentence.
