Goal: Learn how to make a bar graph.

Amelia collected data from her classmates. Data is information collected by asking questions. Here is her data:

table of 15 ice cream cones

We can organize Amelia’s data by using tally marks. Tally marks are a way of counting by drawing lines. They look like this:

table of tally marks from 1-10

The fifth tally mark crosses over a group of four tallies to make a bundle. Tally marks help us count quickly.

Let’s make some tallies! How many students like strawberry ice cream?

table of 15 ice cream cones with 5 brown backgrounds for strawberry ice cream

How many students like chocolate ice cream?

table of 15 ice cream cones with 7 brown backgrounds for chocolate ice cream

How many students like vanilla ice cream?

table of 15 ice cream cones with 3 brown backgrounds for vanilla ice cream

Now let’s use our tally marks to create a bar graph. A bar graph is a graph that uses bars to show numbers so that we can easily understand them.

This is an empty graph. We will use Amelia’s data to make bars inside it!

Empty bar graph. Graph title: Favorite Ice Cream Flavors. X-axis label: Flavors. Y-axis label: Number of Students.

5 students like strawberry ice cream, so let’s color a bar up to the number 5.
