You Try It

Apply what you've learned about integrating information found in two different sources.

Goal:

Earlier in this course, you read two informational texts related to outer space. How might you bring information from both sources together in one report? As you read the paragraphs below, think about how the excerpts are similar to each other. Then answer the questions beneath the excerpts.

from the NASA Web site

A new NASA outreach project will enlist the help of amateur astronomers to discover and study near-Earth objects (NEOs). NEOs are asteroids with orbits that sometimes bring them close to the Earth.

Starting today, a new citizen science project called "Target Asteroids!" will be part of a NASA mission to understand more about these objects. A probe called OSIRIS-Rex is scheduled for launch in 2016 and will study material from an asteroid.

Amateur astronomers will help identify the population of NEOs, including their position, motion, rotation, and changes in the light they emit. Professional astronomers will use this information to improve their understanding about asteroids similar to the one OSIRIS-Rex will study.

from "Those Mysterious Comets"

You may have heard of the famous comet called Haley's Comet. But have you ever seen a comet? In February of 2009, the comet Lulin passed close to the Earth. Other recent comets include 17P/Holmes in 2007 and Ikeya-Murakami in 2010. All of these comets could be seen with your eyes. Looking at the stars is always fun, but seeing a comet is extra special. To do that, though, you need to know what a comet is and how to find one.

Which source could you use for a paragraph on asteroids?

  1. the NASA Web site
  2. "Those Mysterious Comets"
  3. neither
  4. both

Which of the following claims is supported by both sources?

  1. Seeing a comet is extra special.
  2. Only scientists can make astronomical discoveries.
  3. Ordinary people can take part in astronomy.
  4. People need expensive equipment to see the stars.

Both sources support the claim that anyone can study the stars and planets.

What is the best way to include the facts about NEOs in a paper?

  1. Everyone knows that NEOs are near-Earth-objects.
  2. According to the NASA Web site, NEOs are near-Earth-objects like asteroids.
  3. "Those Mysterious Comets" tells us that NEOs are near-Earth-objects like asteroids.
  4. NASA is sending a probe out to study asteroids.

When you include information in your paper from several different sources, it's always a good idea to state where the information came from.
