Goal: What is regrouping?

The big kangaroo ate 28 leaves today. The small kangaroo ate 6 leaves. Let’s add these numbers to find out how many leaves they ate in all!

28 + 6 = ___

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. 2 in the tens section and 8 in the ones section.

Place the larger addend in the place-value chart.

28 + 6 = ___

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. 2 in the tens section, 8 in the ones section, and 6 underneath the number 8.

Place the smaller addend in the place-value chart.

28 + 6 = ___

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. 2 in the tens section, 8 in the ones section, and 6 underneath the number 8. There is a total of 14 in the ones section when adding 8 and 6. 8, 6, and 14 are circled in red.

Add the digits in the ones section first. 8 + 6 = 14. 14 is 2 digits. It is made up of 1 ten and 4 ones. We only want ones in the ones section, so let’s regroup! Regrouping helps us add by moving groups of ones into the tens section.

28 + 6 = ___

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. 2 in the tens section, 8 in the ones section, and 6 underneath the number 8. There is a total of 14 in the ones section when adding 8 and 6. The number 1 in 14, is circled in red, and there is an arrow point from the number 1, to the tens section, above the number 2, adding a 1 in the tens section.

Move the 1 ten into the tens section.

28 + 6 = ___

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. 1 in the tens section and 2 underneath the number 1, for a total of 3, which is circled in red. 8 in the ones section, and 6 underneath the number 8, for a total of 14, and the number 1 is crossed out in the number 14.

Now add the digits in the tens section.

28 + 6 = 34

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. 1 in the tens section and 2 underneath the number 1, for a total of 3. 8 in the ones section, and 6 underneath the number 8, for a total of 14, and the number 1 is crossed out in the number 14. The totals 3, and 14, with the crossed out 1, are circled in red.

Great job! 28 + 6 = 34.

This place-value chart shows 12 + 8. Which digit should we regroup?

Tens and Ones Place-value-chart. There is a 1 in the tens place. And, in the ones place, there is a 2, and underneath that, an 8, for a total of 10, which is red.
