Goal: Use pictures to help you find the difference of a subtraction sentence.

You did a great job helping the aliens get home by finding the correct pictures for each subtraction sentence. Now let’s use subtraction pictures to help us find the difference. The aliens are watching asteroids while sitting on the moon rocks. They see 16 asteroids across the galaxy! Only 7 of the asteroids have rings. How many of the asteroids do not have rings around them?

Here is our subtraction sentence:

16 - 7 = ___

Let’s quickly create a picture to help us subtract. View the slideshow below, and click the picture on the last slide, to make a subtraction picture.

16 asteroids in a line, beginning with 7 of the asteroids with a ring around them
16 asteroids in a line, beginning with 7 asteroids with a ring around them, with 7 red x’s over the 7 asteroids with rings

Great work! Now we need to find the number of planets that do not have rings, or the difference of the subtraction sentence. Count each planet that is leftover to find the difference by clicking each planet that does not have a red x.
