Fluency
How can I become a more fluent reader?
Goal:
Goal:
Let's work on our fluency today
and practice our rate, expression, and intonation.
Our rate is the speed at which we read, expression is reading with
feeling, and intonation is the raising and lowering of our voice as we
read.
Listen to the passage below being read aloud. Listen for the reader's rate, expression,
and intonation. Listen more than once if you need to. Then, read along with the
recording. Can you match the rate, expression, and intonation? It's okay if you need to
try a few times. Practice makes perfect!
I was an only child for most of my
life. That's eight years of being the only child in the family. It's not that I was
spoiled, but I was the only child my parents had to focus on. Life was good! Then,
eight weeks and three days ago, Jacob was born. Jacob is my little brother.
While Mom was pregnant, I had a great attitude about the baby. I was excited. Most of my friends have brothers and sisters, and I thought it would be cool to have a brother too. People kept telling me what a great big brother I would be. I knew they were right. It would be fun to have a little brother look up to me and imitate things I do. I daydreamed about all the things we'd do together.
Now it's your turn! Practice reading the passage aloud. Pay close attention to your rate, expression, and intonation.
When you are ready, record yourself reading the passage on your own using the audio recording software of your choice. Then submit it to your teacher for a grade.
