How do I write a retelling?
Goal:
Goal:
It's time to start writing our retelling. Yesterday, you filled out your graphic organizer. You will need it to write your rough draft today.
Let's go through the steps of writing your rough draft, together. You can write it as you go through the tabs below.
Title
Topic Sentence
Body
Closing Sentence
It's important to give your paragraph a title. You can use the title of the fable, or you can create your own.
Do you remember the example retelling we looked at together? The title was "The Tortoise and the Hare."
Give your paragraph a title.
We need to begin our retelling with a topic sentence. Let's take a look at the topic sentence from "The Tortoise and the Hare." It tells us what the fable is about.
"The Tortoise and the Hare" is a fable about taking your time and trying your best.
Now it's your turn! Write your topic sentence.
Now it's time to retell the story. In the body, you will include details about the setting, characters, and plot of the story.
Let's take a look a the example again.
The two main characters are the tortoise and the hare. The hare is sure he is faster than all the animals in the forest. Tortoise grows tired of his bragging and accepts his challenge of a race. The hare is so confident that he will beat the tortoise, that he takes many breaks and naps during the race. Tortoise never stops. He slowly makes his way to the finish line before the hare realizes that he has wasted too much time.
It's your turn! Write the body of your paragraph. Use the information you listed on your graphic organizer. Remember, this is your rough draft. It doesn't have to be perfect yet.
Let's wrap up your retelling by writing your closing sentence. You are reminding the reader what your paragraph was about.
Let's take a look at the closing sentence for our retelling about "The Tortoise and the Hare."
The tortoise beats the hare because slow and steady always wins the race.
The closing sentence reminded us what the message or lesson was. Think about how you want to end your paragraph. What was the message or lesson in "The Country Mouse and the City Mouse"?
When you are finished with your rough draft, please keep it in a safe place. We will revise it and edit it tomorrow.
