It is time to pull together all of your hard work for your research paragraph and write a rough draft. You have done a lot of the work already, so it is just a matter of putting all of your work into one place. Let’s practice by writing a rough draft about the electric eels.

You know that every paragraph needs a topic sentence to begin with. Earlier, we wrote a topic sentence about electric eels. Here is our topic sentence:

Electric eels are very interesting animals.

Yellow Light Sentences

After a topic sentence we need supporting sentences, or "yellow light" sentences. That is when we slow down and explain the topic we are writing about. Your supporting sentences for your research paragraph are the three answers to the questions you have already researched and written about.

Electric eels are very interesting animals. Electric eels are snake-like fish that have brown skin with tan spots. Electric eels live in the Amazon River and other parts of South America. Electric eels eat other fish. An electric eel shock is like a 600-volt electric shock. One shock cannot kill you, but being shocked over and over could kill you.

Red Light Sentence

We are getting there. Now that we have topic and supporting sentences written, it is time to stop and write our concluding, or red-light, sentence to wrap up our paragraph.

There are so many fascinating things to learn about an electric eel.
