13 snowballs with 5 crossed out

What is 13 - 5?

If 13 - 5 = 8, what is the missing number in
13 - ___ = 5?

13 - 5 = 8

13 - ___ = 5

We can find the missing number using a fact family! A fact family is made up of 2 subtraction sentences with the same parts and whole.

This is a fact-family triangle. The parts are in the bottom corners of the triangle, and the whole is at the top.

fact family triangle: 5 in bottom left, 8 in bottom right, 13 at the top

Fact-family triangles can help us form fact families. Both subtraction sentences use the same numbers in the fact-family triangle.
