Edmundo and his friends are in line to ride the roller coaster. They have to be at least 48 inches tall to ride the roller coaster. Let’s measure them!

Edumundo is 50 inches tall. His friends are 48 inches, 52 inches, 54 inches, 49 inches, and 52 inches tall.

Let’s put this data in a tally chart. Edumundo is 50 inches tall, so we’ll draw a tally mark next to 50. We’ll also draw tally marks next to 48, 49, 52, and 54.

We can understand this data even better in a bar graph. This is an empty bar graph. Can you use the data from the tally chart to create each bar? Let’s try!

The tally chart says that 1 person is 48 inches tall. Let’s make the bar line up with 1.

How many people are 49 inches tall? That’s right! 1 person.

The tally chart says that 1 person is 50 inches tall, no one is 51 inches tall, 2 people are 52 inches tall, no one is 53 inches tall, and 1 person is 54 inches tall.

Great job! Our bar graph is complete! Can Edmundo and his friends ride the roller coaster? Remember, they have to be at least 48 inches tall. Yes! Each person is 48 inches tall or taller!

How many people were measured for this ride? Let’s count together: one, two, three, four, five, six. Six people were measured.

How many people are 52-54 inches tall? Let’s add the bars together! 2 + 1 = 3. 3 people are 52-54 inches tall.

How many people are 50 inches tall or shorter? Let’s add those bars together! 1 + 1 + 1 = 3. 3 people are 50 inches tall or shorter.

Thanks for helping us understand the data in this graph and tally chart! Edmundo and his friends are ready to ride the roller coaster!

How many classmates are 49-51 inches tall?

Bar graph for height of Maria's classmates. 46-48: 3, 49-51: 9, 52-54: 9, 55-57: 3.

Correct! The bar above 49-51 lines up with 9.

9 students are 49-51 inches tall because the bar lines up with 9.
