Selecting literature to read aloud to students is a way for teachers to use rich text with their students, review reading concepts, and expose their students to new vocabulary.

An Interactive Read Aloud synchronous session involves the teacher sharing a story with the students.

  • Before reading the story, the teacher introduces the book by engaging in a discussion with students about what the book could be about to pique student interest.

  • During reading, the teacher reads the book aloud, pausing to discuss the story by asking questions, making connections, discussing concepts, and introducing or reviewing new vocabulary.

  • After reading the story, the teacher leads students through an interactive activity related to the story.

Interactive Read Aloud synchronous sessions are a chance for students to work on speaking and listening skills and to develop a love of reading through social interaction around books. Read Alouds expose students to rich text, enhancing student learning by building on concepts they are learning within the course. The list of books shown below can be used in the Interactive Read Aloud synchronous sessions you have with your students.

Each book has:

  • a suggested transcript to guide the teacher through the Read Aloud that includes what to say before, during, and after reading the story.

  • a suggested interactive activity to complete with the students after reading the story.

If the interactive activity is a web link, the teacher can send the activity to the students through the chat of their synchronous meeting so that they can actually do the activity on their own first and then review it with the teacher. If the activity is a PowerPoint, it is completed with the teacher leading a discussion with the students and filling in their answers. The PowerPoint will need to be downloaded and used in edit mode in order to type student answers.

Some of the books on this list are too long to cover in one synchronous session, so the transcript may only cover selected pages of the book, or chapters of the book. A teacher can choose to continue reading the book with their students on their own, scheduling more synchronous sessions with their students, or they can encourage their students to find the book at a local library and read it on their own for independent reading if they choose.

The books on this list can be found for free through Epic Books or openlibrary.org. You may also find these books at a local library or available for purchase where books are sold. In addition to this Read Aloud list, the course guide lists more suggested books for learning coaches, parents, and teachers to read aloud with their students.
